Growing up, Derek was an active kid playing basketball and baseball. After graduating from high school in 2005, he continued his basketball career in college where unfortunately knee injuries ended his tenure after his sophomore year.
Still wanting to be connected to an active lifestyle, Derek discovered personal training. In 2011, Derek was hired first as personal trainer at Gold's Gym while at the same time interning at various sports performance training facilities that catered to athletes.
In 2014, Derek landed the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach position for the men's basketball team at Edmonds Community College where he still currently serves. In 2015, Derek founded Strength University, a dedicated barbell training gym out of his garage in Kirkland, WA. After one year in the garage, Strength University moved to it's current location where Derek continues his passion coaching people of all walks of life who want to become the strongest version of themselves.
